Manipur man is awarded $5000 and an honorary mention in the ‘'Facebook Hall of Fame 2019' for detecting a WhatsApp bug

Zonel Sougaijam, a 22-year-old civil engineer from Manipur has been awarded $5000 for detecting a bug in WhatsApp, as informed by him. He has also received an honorary mention in the 'Facebook Hall of Fame 2019'. The bug violated the users’ privacy and the social media giant has acknowledged his effort. One can find his name currently at the 16th position in the ‘Facebook Hall of Fame 2019’, which has 94 people in the list.

“During a voice call through WhatsApp, the bug would let the caller upgrade it to a video call without the knowledge and authorization of the receiver. The caller was then able to see what the other person was doing, violating the privacy of the receiver,” informed Sougaijam. After discovering the bug, he immediately reported it to the Bug Bounty Program of Facebook, which allows security researchers or common people to submit potential flaws in the applications that the company own.

Facebook’s security team took immediate action after acknowledging his report and its technical team fixed the bug within 20 days.

The company decided to award him a bounty of $5000 which is a huge amount. Zonel informed that he saw his name in the ‘Hall of Fame’ page of Facebook. Such an appreciation from the company side shows how it genuinely cares about someone’s effort in making the platform secure in every possible way for everyone’s use.
