Screening Diabetics for Eye Conditions that May Cause Blindness: Google’s New Program for India

Google has been doing its research and working in its labs. Finally, its efforts have come out into clinics. Along with its sister company Verily, Google plans on screening its medical imaging for two conditions. These two conditions have been a major impact on millions of people around the world and they are diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema. According to reports around 347 million people have diabetes around the world. This has been the cause of blindness in many cases.

To provide a solution Aravind Eye Hospital which is in Madurai, India has tagged with these two sister companies to produce an advanced tech. These three companies will join hand in hand on this new venture using certain algorithms that will help doctors to treat better. There is a huge shortage of eye doctors which is calculated to be up to 100,000 and an epidemic of diabetic retinopathy. With this in mind, Google and Verily felt India is a perfect place to develop this new algorithm in order to target those individuals who are prone to blindness. Let us see how far this new innovation takes India and how far it will help doctors.
