Going Green: Hyundai Rolls out a new EV in India

Hyundai Motor Corp. has rolled out a fully electric car in India on Tuesday, ET reported. Dubbed as Kona SUV, the car’s starting prices are tagged from $36,000; making it eight times costlier than India’s bestselling car, Alto.

The launch marks a full-fledged EV rollout in the Indian market where the marker bets on affordable, entry-level cars.

The South Korean automaker will be hoping on the government of India’s mission to make the country self-sufficient in producing cleaner energy in everything from vehicles to power plants and contain the world’s worst pollution level in major cities. While the government hasn’t revealed anything officially about allowing the car makers to sell only EVs, officials are eyeing to phase out vehicles which run on gasoline and diesel.

India’s local car manufacturers, Tata and Mahindra, have already produced some base-level EVs in the country, but there is an only a limited range of cars or only the government can purchase them. According to Indian government reports, the market share of EVs in India is below the 1 percent mark as compared to Norway’s 39%.

The new fully electric car can travel 452 kilometres on a single charge; while 80 percent of the battery can be charged under 60 minutes. Hyundai is working closely with Indian Oil to set up charging stations for EVs; helping customers to establish charging points in their homes.
